Detroit Red Wings

The Red Wings' approach to any game is to focus on themselves and what they need  to do to be successful. Rarely do they spare a thought on the visiting general manager. It is, naturally, different when he's Steve Yzerman, former captain of the Wings and local hockey hero.

Aaron Rodgers was at his best, throwing lasers where only his receivers could catch them and finding four different teammates in the end zone. Yes, Rodgers had a lot to do with the Green Bay Packers remaining undefeated with a crazy 45-38 win over the staggering San Diego Chargers.

You can hear skepticism related to Smith all over the radio and TV and slowly spreading to the barrooms and boardrooms. Reflexively, we love to find fault with him. Bears victories are apocryphal, losses create football Armageddon. Some of the persistent doubt is valid, some of it isn’t, but all of it represents the passion the Bears ignite in the NFL’s second-largest market. Tigers fans unhappy about his decisions as the team's third-base coach probably won't believe it, but the Boston Red Sox reportedly will interview Gene Lamont for their managerial job Saturday.

Black Colleges

The Great Lakes state of Michigan has played an undeniably important role in bringing African-Americans to a prominent place in contemporary American culture. Known as Motown because of its history as the Ford headquarters, Detroit has launched the national and international careers of African-American musicians like Smokey Robinson, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, and Michael Jackson. Aside from a thriving and historical music culture, Detroit offers black college students a regional hub for the performing arts, a black majority of around eighty percent, and proximity to Winsor, Ontario, a popular destination in Canada. The first historically black college in Michigan, Detroit's Lewis College of Business, was founded in 1928. Black students in Detroit may find prestigious programs in business, engineering, manufacturing, and the humanities.

Calvin Johnson is good. Real good. But this season, the Lions' star receiver has been better than ever. Coach Jim Schwartz has a special disdain for acknowledging success too early. Even though Johnson is on a torrid pace with 11 touchdowns, Schwartz emphasized the goal lines Johnson has yet to cross. "But just like our team, 6-2 doesn't mean a lot if we don't do something with that over the second half of the season," he said. "And I'm sure Calvin won't feel good about the first half of the season if he can't continue to have that kind of season, even play better over the second half of the year.''
